De Vizcaya retired on the first lap due to a pun- cture. On the third lap, he suffered another tire problem, which caused drama in front of the 100,000 spectators at the track. This was fol- lowed by further retirements and technical pro- blems, including with the cooling system and gearbox.
Investigations after the race revealed that the tire problems were due to manufacturing de- fects. Despite these setbacks, the innovative Type 35 cast aluminum wheels proved their robustness and reliability. In a post-race report, The Motor praised the wheels for their perfor- mance under extreme conditions.
Bugatti reacted quickly to the problems and changed tire suppliers. In a letter, he emphasi- zed the fundamental reliability of the Type 35 and demonstrated this with an impressive drive from Strasbourg to Paris at an average speed of almost 100 km/h. He was optimistic about the future of the Type 35 and its potential as a road and racing vehicle.
