Der Volvo P1800 wurde bereits 1960 auf dem internationalen Concours d‘Elegance für schöne Coupés gefeiert. Doch erst im Sommer 1963, unter dem neuen Namen Volvo 1800 S und mit der Verlagerung der Produktion ins Volvo-Werk Lundby bei Göteborg, wurde der Gran Turismo zum weltweiten Verkaufserfolg. Das „S” stand vor allem für Sverige (Schweden) und den neuen Produktionsstandort, obwohl es ursprünglich schwedische Qualität symbolisieren sollte.
The Volvo P1800 was already celebrated at the international Concours d’Elegance for beautiful coupés in 1960. But it was not until the summer of 1963, under the new name Volvo 1800 S and with the relocation of production to the Volvo plant in Lundby near Gothenburg, that the Gran Turismo became a worldwide sales success. The “S” stood above all for Sverige (Sweden) and the new production site, although it was originally intended to symbolize Swedish quality.
