Im Zentrum der Geschichte steht die exzentri- sche Nachtclubsängerin Deloris van Cartier, die zufällig Zeugin eines Verbrechens wird und im Zeugenschutzprogramm in einem Kloster unter- tauchen muss. Dort trifft sie auf die konservative und streng gläubige Mutter Oberin und den eher untalentierten Kirchenchor. Als Deloris die Leitung übernimmt, erweckt sie den Chor zu neuem Leben, und schon bald wird jeder Gottesdienst zum Event. Doch die Rückkehr auf die Bühne bringt auch Ge- fahren mit sich: Gangster sind Deloris auf der Spur und das Abenteuer spitzt sich zu, als die Nonnen schließlich vor dem Papst singen sollen.
The story revolves around the eccentric nightclub singer Deloris van Cartier, who by chance witnesses a crime and has to go into hiding in a convent during the course of a witness protection programme. There she meets the conservative and devout Mother Superior and the rather untalented church choir. When Deloris takes over as director, she revitalises the choir and every church service is soon transformed into an event. But her return to the stage is not free of danger: gangsters are on Deloris’s trail and the adventure comes to a head when the nuns are ultimately asked to sing before the Pope.
