The Bugatti Type 35 made its debut a century ago and impressed not only with its design and technology, but also with continuous further developments. Ettore Bu- gatti was a visionary designer who had the courage to break with convention and always strived for perfec- tion. Bugatti recognised early on the importance of racing for commercial success and continued to push the Type 35 to increase its performance.
The first Type 35 from 1924 had an eight-cylinder en- gine with 1,991 cm3 and 90 PS. However, Bugatti was aware that a simple increase in displacement would not be enough. As early as 1924, he applied for a patent for a supercharger that could deliver additional power. Together with Edmond Moglia, he developed a Roots compressor with three rotors, which was mounted on the outside of the engine. Another innovative feature was the heating of the exhaust manifold by the engine coolant.
