Die Geschichte von BMW Art Cars
Seit fast 50 Jahren ermöglicht BMW weltbekannten Künstlern, ihre Kunst mit dem Auto als Leinwand aus- zudrücken. Die Idee, mit prominenten Künstlern zusam- menzuarbeiten, um Autos in rollende Kunstwerke zu ver- wandeln, entstand 1975, als der französische Rennfahrer Hevré Poulain die Idee hatte, einen Künstler, Alexander Calder, den Rennwagen als Leinwand für ein Kunstwerk nutzen zu lassen. Niemand konnte damals ahnen, dass sie damit moderne Kunstgeschichte schrieben und dass das Auto der Beginn des BMW Art Car Projekts sein würde.
Viele weltberühmte Künstler sind in Calders Fußstapfen getreten, darunter Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Cao Fei, Esther Mahlangu und Jeff Koons, um nur einige zu nennen. In diesem Frühjahr wird das Auto der zwanzigsten Künstlerin, Julie Mehretu, am 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans 2024 teilnehmen. Mehretu ist bekannt für ihre abstrakten Gemälde und gilt als eine der einflussreichsten Künstlerinnen ihrer Ge- neration.
The history of BMW Art Cars
For almost 50 years, BMW has allowed world-renowned artists to express their art using the car as a canvas. The idea of collaborating with promi- nent artists to transform cars into rolling works of art began when, in 1975, French racing driver Hevré Pou- lain came up with the idea of letting an artist, Alexan- der Calder, use the racing car as a canvas to paint a piece of art. No one could have predicted then that they were making modern art history and that the car would be the start of the BMW Art Car project.
Many world-famous artists have followed in Calder‘s footsteps, including, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Cao Fei, Esther Mahlan- gu and Jeff Koons to name but a few. This spring, the car of the twentieth artist, Julie Mehretu, will compete at the 2024 Le Mans 24-hour race.
