E-fuel creation, involving carbon capture and hydrogen extraction from water via electrolysis, demands significant electricity. Depending on the electricity source—whether it’s from fossil fuels like natural gas or coal—affects the fuel’s carbon footprint.
Porsche’s e-fuel initiative in Chile, powered by wind turbines, claims an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular gasoline. To reach the essential 100% carbon neutrality, transportation and processing must solely use renewable energy.
Initially for Porsche racing, the Chilean factory aims to produce 550 million liters (145.3M gallons) of e-fuel. Motorsports, notably in Britain, leads in technology transfer. P1 Fuels’ fossil-free fuel, created via carbon capture and biomass, has powered various racing events, including karting, historic races, rallying, and the World Rally Championship.
