Zu dieser Zeit gab es in Korea keine Kapazitäten für Fahrzeugdesign, und so beauftragte Hyundai Motor Giugiaro mit dem Entwurf, der Erstellung von Plänen und dem Bau von fünf Prototypen, da- runter ein Coupé. Während des Design- und Pro- totyping-Prozesses beschloss Hyundai, den Pony und das Pony Coupé auf dem Turiner Automobil- salon 1974 vorzustellen, um das Debüt der Marke auf dem Weltmarkt zu fördern.
Das Pony-Coupé war für den nordamerikanischen und europäischen Markt bestimmt, doch das Pro- jekt wurde 1981 kurz vor der Serienproduktion aufgrund der schlechten Weltwirtschaftslage ein- gestellt. Obwohl das Konzept damals ein uner- füllter Traum blieb, trug es zum Aufschwung der koreanischen Automobilindustrie bei und hatte di- rekten Einfluss auf die ersten eigenständigen Seri- enmodelle von Hyundai mit dem Namen Pony, die von 1975 bis 1990 gebaut und weltweit verkauft wurden.
Jetzt kehrt das Pony-Coupé in seiner ursprüngli- chen Form zurück, aber mit einer eindrucksvolle- ren Präsenz. Giorgetto Giugiaro sagt über seinen ursprünglichen Entwurf: „Ich habe den Hyundai Pony entworfen, als ich noch ein junger Designer war, ganz am Anfang meiner Karriere. Ich war sehr stolz darauf, ein Fahrzeug für ein Unternehmen und ein Land zu entwerfen, das im Begriff war, sich auf einem hart umkämpften globalen Markt zu be- haupten. Jetzt fühle ich mich zutiefst geehrt, dass Hyundai mich gebeten hat, es für die Nachwelt und als Hommage an das Erbe der Marke wieder aufzubauen.
At the time, there was no vehicle design capability in Korea, so Hyundai Motor commissioned Giugi- aro to design, plan and build five prototypes, inclu- ding a coupé. During the design and prototyping process, Hyundai decided to launch the Pony and Pony Coupé at the 1974 Turin Motor Show to pro- mote the brand‘s debut on the world market.
The Pony coupé was intended for the North Ame- rican and European markets, but the project was cancelled in 1981, just before mass production, due to the poor world economy. Although the con- cept remained an unfulfilled dream at the time, it helped boost the Korean automotive industry and had a direct influence on Hyundai‘s first series production models, called Pony, which were built and sold worldwide from 1975 to 1990.
Now the Pony coupe returns in its original form, but with an even more commanding presence. Giorgetto Giugiaro said of his original design: „I designed the Hyundai Pony when I was a young designer, at the very beginning of my career. I took great pride in designing a car for a company and a country that was about to compete in a highly competitive global market, and I am now deeply honoured that Hyundai has asked me to redesign it for posterity and as a tribute to the brand‘s he- ritage.
